Apple wants over-the-air music downloads for free 3G iPhone

Apple is in talks some of the major music labels over a deal that would allow next-generation iPhone owners to purchase music tracks directly from the handset over cellular wireless networks, according to the New York Times.

Owners of the company’s first-generation free iPhone can already accomplish this via a mobile version of the iTunes Store that resides on the handset, but they must be connected to the Internet via a high-speed WiFi connection to do so.

The arrival of faster 3G cellular network access alongside the next free 3G iPhone, widely expected for an announcement during the second week of June at Apple’s developers conference, would make it more “technically feasible” for Apple to offer the over-the-air route, the Times notes.

However, the paper reports that the music labels are holding their hand out, demanding that in return they be paid more than the 70 cent wholesale price of songs sold over traditional Internet lines.

Apple’s hoping for “a big launch in June,” according to one label executive familiar with the matter, and as such is also looking to expand its inventory of songs that are available for conversion to ringtones at 99 cents.

“The company is also hoping to add answer tones, also known as ringback tones—songs that a caller hears instead of the ‘ring ring’ sound while waiting for someone to answer,” the report says. “In some cases, these command an even higher wholesale price than ringtones.”

Given that the negotiations are only a few weeks young, it’s reported that any deal may not be announced until after June 9th, the most likely day for the introduction of the much-anticipated free 3G iPhone.

Video of iDial Application for iPhone

seems as if we are being bombarded with ingenious applications for the iPhone, and iDial is no different. Basically a rotary dial on the touchscreen, it’s probably more time-consuming than useful, but chapeau for coolness. Shame the video is so blurred, though. [Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

Power your free iPhone on the Go

Yeah, the multi-touch screen interface on the Free iPhone is cool and all, but one thing that will get anybody down is a dead battery; and as Apple products go, they don’t necessarily come with widely common charging port design nor is it easy to find a fellow iPhone-user from whom you can borrow a charger from.

Power on the go

So, for the busy body who’s always on the go, we recommend the Mophie Juice Pack. It’s already available in Digital Walker branches for a very reasonable price considering the benefits you’ll be getting. It’s basically a slide on battery pack that snuggly fits your iPhone with battery indicator lights located at the rear of the device. It more or less doubles the battery life of your iPhone so you need not worry of running out of juice for a couple of days when you’re continuously on the road (or just keep on forgetting to charge the phone).

Of course, this info only applies for those who have resourcefully purchased a free iPhone already despite it not yet being released officially in the local market, but it’s a nice thing to know that aside from protective cases, there are products such as this that are already available locally. An iPod Touch version is said to be in the available as well, but it still isn’t available as of this writing. www.myfreeiphone.co.uk the one stop website for a free 3G iphone.

iPhone Set To Turn Broadband Into Rivers Of Gold

When the iPhone is finally released in this country, it will not just be tech addicts that will be the winners; third party OEMS’, app makers and other providers will also be getting some hot action from the Apple gravy train.

For local telcos, in particular newly-annointed iPhone vendors Vodafone and Optus it has the potential to massively boost revenue through increased data downloads.

For example, reports from T-mobile and O2 in Europe, and more recently AT&T in the US have all noted that anyone who uses an iPhone downloads more data than they ever had done so before with any other phone – all adding to an increasingly fat bottom line.

Furthermore, the iPhone’s impact is also expected to go way beyond just the mobile phone market, with many tech watchers saying there will be a flow on effect to such products as the iPod and by default, Apples online music store, iTunes.

And as was seen when the iPod was launched, sales of Mac computers also went up as well, a situation that will probably repeat itself post-iPhone launch.

And then there are the third party app and hardware providers such as makers of protective covers, portable hard drives, headphones, carry cases and all the various flavours of docking stations now available for the iPhone.

This digital ecosystem is something that Apple itself is carefully nurturing and with more than 21 million mobile phones in the country, Apple will be hoping that not only will consumers rush to replace their current mobile phones with the iPhone, but may well find it such a pleasure to use that their next purchase may well be an iPod and then, perhaps even decide a little later to replace that Toshiba or Sony laptop with a MacBook Air.

Microsoft and other vendors could well learn much from Apple in terms of cross marketing.

Why you shouldn’t buy the 2.0 iPhone

With the recent announcement from RIM and the rumor of an entire new line from that company, coupled with some amazing new phones from companies like Asus, you may want to wait until later in the year to buy an iPhone. However, I know it is hard to avoid the Apple marketing juggernaut and the rabid rush to the stores when a new cool Apple offering comes out. I figured it would be wise to remind you about the initial release of the iPhone and the pain associated with the early adopters.

We learned a few things about the first iPhone. We learned where it worked well, we learned where it worked marginally, and we learned where it sucked. The 2.0 version of the iPhone is expected to be released in the first ten days of next month, and is also expected to be a vastly improved product, but one other thing we learned was that the timing of your purchase is important because a large number of the folks who lined up for days to buy the first iPhone got screwed.

Timing

I’m seeing increasing noise in the industry suggesting that Apple may be working on multiple phones but that some may not show up for a number of months. It is likely Apple will respond to known threats by competitors like Samsun, LG, Asus and RIM in any case and one of these phone designs may be a better choice for you.

Recall that with the first iPhone folks waited in line for hours only to find the phones readily available a few short days later. In addition, also recall that there were so many switching from other carriers to AT&T that the people who did the switching got overwhelmed, and a lot of people had to do without their phones for extended periods of time. It is even possible Apple will reduce prices again a couple months after the launch as they did the first time to accelerate demand into the back-to-school buying season. But this is probably unlikely.

Also realize that this 2.0 version represents a significant software change, which introduces third-party software onto the platform. This is likely to cause some initial breakage as the bugs are worked out. On this last, the process that Apple has put in place to apparently assure quality goes beyond anything I’ve ever seen on a platform available to third-party developers, and I think you can conclude that the breakage window will probably be relatively short.

This suggests your best bet is probably to not buy the iPhone on the initial launch weekend and instead wait until volume catches up with demand and the facilities to switch the phone, if you are switching from another service, catch up. I doubt you’ll need to wait a month but it probably would be prudent, given what happened with the first generation, to at least wait a week or two while following any breakage reports to ensure your experience will go seamlessly.

With any new product there is a period of time when initial problems need to be worked out and that, particularly with a phone you depend on, any breakage is probably not worth having the device early. Reviewers will probably have the phones around the end of this month but they’ll be personally serviced by Apple to ensure positive reviews so those initial reviews should be taken with a grain of salt.

Independent reviewers should have reviews up the day of the launch and these will likely be more reliable and give us a better sense where the new phone’s shortcomings are. (It is most likely to have battery issues given this is a common problem with first generation 3G phones).

Who won’t like the iPhone?

I’ve just become aware that RIM is planning on bringing out a new line of cellphones starting with the announced Blackberry Bold, and following with both clamshell and touch-screen products. This will allow IT to point to offerings they can approve and will fund over iPhones which, to them, appear to be more entertainment based. We are walking into a recessionary year and IT is very likely to want to contain any support costs. Trying to get approvals for exceptions when budgets undoubtedly will be very tight anyway might be a fast path to not getting the company to pay for any part of your phone service so be aware of the risks.

While the iPhone’s improvements will dramatically improve Web experiences and the device will interface much better with corporate e-mail systems, it still lacks the thumb keyboard that BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users have become addicted to. And until the device addresses this, it will probably not be acceptable to most who currently are addicted to a Blackberry-like device.

Some short iPhone advice

Oh, if you have a tendency to leave your phone in public places or drop your phone a lot you won’t have it long. These things are clear targets for thieves and I can’t tell you the number of them I’ve seen with broken screens so, if you get one, make sure you get a protective cover. It seems that mostly these are dropped when folks are rushing to pull it out of their pocket or purse or when they share them with others and the other folks drop them. Trust me when I say there are few things sadder than a brand new iPhone with a broken screen.

In addition, if you like to watch a lot of videos on the device you may want to pick up the extended battery made by Mophie and called the “Juice Pack.” It costs $100 but can add substantially to the battery life of the phone.

Wrapping up

I think we are moving to a time when our cellphones begin to aggressively encroach on the space normally occupied by laptop computers. Products like the Cellio Redfly which expand a Windows Mobile 6.1 cellphone into the capability of a full laptop are coming rapidly to market and will change dramatically how we use devices like this. I’m particularly impressed with the potential for an offering like the Redfly which may eventually work with the iPhone now that Apple has opened the platform up.

In addition, there are clear alternatives this round that might make a better choice. The new Samsung Glyde might be better for those that are power e-mail users and the coming Asus 3.5G M536 and Lamborghini phones may be worth waiting for.

Still, with what is expected to be a sharp price drop for the iPhone allowing it to sell in the $200 range you may not care. In any case, take your time, and buy smart as you’ll be living with this decision for the next two years of your phone contract.

sghi900pic1

Welcome to the next apparent Apple iPhone killer which is what some sources are calling it, to tell you the truth we are getting sick and tired of “The Apple iPhone Killer Syndrome” but hey we have to report the news how we found it.

We have sourced below to someone who just reports the news how it is and this is where we found more info about the Samsung SGH-i900, we heard about this mobile phone sometime back now but did not have enough information to publish any good news, but hey we are now. The Samsung SGH-i900 or just plain and simple Samsung i900, this phone looks pretty similar to another phone we hear about quiet a lot but no names mentioned its boring to go on and on about it, let’s just talk about what this new Samsung phone has. First of all like our source below we were pretty miffed whether this phone was real or not, anyway the Samsung i900 apparently features a 5 megapixel camera with auto focus, measures 112 × 56 × 13mm, has the Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro package, 16GB of onboard memory plus microSDHC support up to 8GB, 3.5-inch 400 X 240 display, HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, TV-out, very good touch-sensitive pad, fingerprint reader, only features two buttons on the face and FM radio.

iPhone 3G Could Arrive Earlier Than Expected

Inventory for the iPhone is prompting 3G speculations as stock for the device is running low at Apple retail stores, suggesting that the company may be unveiling its newer model soon.

It was estimated that Apple may officially release its 3G model of its iPhone in May, however, several analysts have called dozens of Apple Stores to confirm the shortages. This could mean that the next model could be available sooner. Or, this could just be pure speculation, but when does an Apple store have low stock on one of the most selling items for the company at the beginning of Spring?

In past experiences, Apple begins to thin inventory before a new product launch. As a result, the growing shortage of iPhone supplies at Apple Stores could mean that the device will be replaced.

However, AT&T stores in the US and retail outlets in other countries where the smartphone is available are not short on supply. In addition to that, the FCC hasn’t approved a new version of the iPhone. FCC approval is mandatory, and generally occurs up to two months before new phones are available for sale. It is notable, however, that occasionally the FCC approves phones immediately before launch.

Apple wants to meet an initial order of 11 million cell phones to be built this year. This means they want to sell as many as they can.

However, other analysts familiar with Apple’s order patterns say pending production reports are typically overestimated by the company, largely to keep component suppliers fully stocked should increase demand skyrocket. Apple will probably make about half of the 11 million iPhones the initial production plan calls for. It will probably have about one million phones ready at launch and 4 to 5 million to follow later this year, according to one analyst.

The new phone will operate on AT&T’s faster network offering faster speeds to mobile Internet users and will include more features including GPS navigation. While the price is still in question, some analysts predict a high price, as much as $500 per unit.
